IBM Fools Around With Atoms and Makes a Rubbish Film

By Gary Cutlack on at

IBM has made a film. Only instead of hiring Gerard Butler and Helen Hunt to portray the potential for atom-level processor power, the tech company has organised actual individual atoms to create a stop motion stick boy story.

Claiming that "even nanophysicists need to have a little fun," the basic clip is similar to something we'd have seen Morph doing back in the 1970s and not exactly Oscar material, but still. Those are actual atoms you can see there, positioned precisely by IBM engineers for each of the film's frames. That's impressive. And, crucially, it might one day lead to our phones being even smaller and lighter and faster.

If you'd like to see how they did it, IBM's put a 'Making of' film up on YouTube too. [YouTube via Slashgear]
