Microsoft Sorry For Its Horribly Awkward E3 Rape Joke

By Chris Mills on at

Microsoft really can't get anything right -- forget the Xbox One, they managed to screw up a game demo with a bit of 'unscripted banter' that devolved far to quickly into rape jokes. On stage. In front of the world's press. (And it wasn't even a funny joke.)

The controversey comes from the above demo of Killer Instinct. The guy who was winning at the demo told his opponent, who was a woman, to "Just let it happen. It'll be over soon". When she started being a sore loser and commenting on his 'fight stick' (ooh, matron), he asked "do you like this?", to which she replied (uncannily similar response to most rape victims) "no, I don't like it".

Ok, so sure, it's not the most shocking joke in the world -- much worse has been broadcast by dubious stand-up comedians in the witching hours on TV -- but it's rather tasteless coming from a company as giant as Microsoft.

For what it's worth, Microsoft is apologetic:

"Yesterday, during the Xbox E3 briefing, one of our employees made an off the cuff and inappropriate comment while demoing ‘Killer Instinct’ with another employee. This comment was offensive and we apologize,"

On the bright side, at least people have forgotten about the Xbox One for five minutes. [The Atlantic Wire]
