Nasa's Robot Monkey Ready for Moon-Tree Climbing by December

By Gary Cutlack on at

Nasa's RoboSimian product ought to be ready to go by the end of the year, with the robotic walker/climber scheduled to compete in this December's Robotics Challenge -- a sort of Krypton Factor for robots.

The Nasa Jet Propulsion Lab has been working on RoboSimian for ages, building a four-limbed, multi-kneed machine able to climb, handle things and walk, with the idea being to create something that can cope with dangerous environments and be a useful helper in disaster situations here on Earth.

There should be an epic battle come December, as the RoboSapien will be facing off against DARPA's impressive ATLAS robot, which is your more traditional Terminator-like humanoid kind of thing. Tasks featuring in the Robotics Challenge include driving vehicles, using tools and opening doors. No fighting. [JPL via Dvice]
