Sherlock's Cumberbatch Starts Silent Anti-Government Protest Campaign

By Gary Cutlack on at

Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch has gone a bit political on the set of the show, baffling onlooking paparazzi by holding up a series of messages conveying his thoughts on the surveillance scandal that's currently gripping the world.

Rightly assuming that him giving a dry speech on the matter probably wouldn't make too many headlines in our celebrity photo driven modern world, Cumberbatch has decided to get his personal thoughts on the matter across by holding up handwritten notes when he spots photographers poking their lenses at him out on the streets of London.

His notes are designed to be thought provoking, conveying messages such as "Schedule 7 Prior restraint -- is this erosion of civil liberties winning the war on terror?" and the lengthier "What do they not want you to know? And how did they get to know it? Does the exposure of their techniques cause a threat to our security or does it just cause them embarrassment?"

If he'd held a press conference on the matter, it's unlikely anyone would really be talking about what Benedict Cumberbatch thinks about the detainment of David Miranda. But Sherlock, on the set of the show, holding up a photo that's easily shareable on Twitter... it's an interesting way of bringing a little bit of politics to the masses. [Buzzfeed]
