The government's announced plans to ban the rip-off premium 084 and 087 numbers from being used to contact some companies, with new rules set to reduce the cost of calls to customer query and complaint numbers.
The Department of Business, Innovation and Skills is pushing through the move, which will restrict many companies from charging more than the cost of a call to a mobile or landline number to contact them from next June.
It's not the complete end of the premium-rate helpline, though, as some business sectors -- like gambling, financial businesses, travel companies and even some government departments -- will be allowed to carry on using them for the time being. [Guardian]
