Renowned nature enthusiast Sir David Attenborough thinks we're enjoying the best days of humanity, suggesting that population explosion and other factors may mean our descendants will envy the good times us lot had trashing the planet.
Attenborough also believes we're done evolving as a species, thanks to our medical services that ensure most babies survive birth, pointing out that: "We stopped natural selection as soon as we started being able to rear 90-95% of our babies that are born. We are the only species to have put a halt to natural selection, of its own free will, as it were."
He's not too down on our future, though, suggesting there will probably always be a human presence on the planet in some form or other: "We're very clever and extremely resourceful -- and we will find ways of preserving ourselves, of that I'm sure. But whether our lives will be as rich as they are now is another question."
He summarised his rather gloomy opinions with: "I'm not particularly optimistic about the future. I think we're lucky to be living when we are, because things are going to get worse." [Guardian via io9]
