Eyes-On With Samsung's OLED UHD TV of the Future

By Sam Gibbs on at

The combination of 4K resolution and OLED display technology sure makes for a potentially tasty concoction, and boy does it live up to its promise. It may be just a prototype, but Samsung's OLED UHD display is the most gorgeous TV I've ever seen.

The first thing that strikes you when you're looking at the TV in the booth is the standard UHD experience -- wow, does that look sharp! But of course 4K is going to look razor sharp on anything other than an absolutely colossal display. It's good to see the OLED screen doesn't destroy the pin-sharp quality of 4K, though, and promises much for the future.

The second thing that hits you is just how fully saturated and rich the colours are. They're truly eye-popping, and frankly that's a bit of an understatement. In fact, the demo content looked hyperreal, with colours pushed to the extreme end of the scale. That's usually the case for demonstration material, and why dealers and manufacturers use the big, bold colours of animated films to show off the sets. However, the sheer crispness and vibrant display really has to be seen to be believed. If you ever got this thing into your home, I suspect it'd be a bit more toned down, and that's probably a good thing.

The OLED display brings with it incredibly deep blacks and intense contrast, which makes the display like looking out of a window, with especially nicely displayed night scenes.

Let's just say that, yes, you're going to want one of these. It'll be an "if you have to ask, you can't afford it" proposition from the off, but looking at Samsung's stunning display gives me hope that we're finally going in the right direction with TV development. It really was the most delicious-looking picture I've seen to date. I'd sell a kidney, heck, I'd sell all your kidneys to get that on my wall.
