Genius Intern Builds Ordnance Survey Minecraft Map of Great Britain

By Gary Cutlack on at

A staggering Minecraft map constructed of around 22 billion blocks has been published by the Ordnance Survey, with our legendary national mapping unit building a realistic 224,000 square kilometre map of the entirety of Great Britain.

Even more amazing is the fact that an intern, Joseph Braybrook, built it in just two weeks, using the OS's open source mapping data and a custom piece of code to import the data into a standard Minecraft map format. If you want to fiddle around with it, you need 3.6GB of free hard drive space to house the uncompressed map file. [OS]
