Is Rubbish Music or Legal Streaming Responsible for the Huge Drop in UK Music Piracy?

By Gary Cutlack on at

Stats on the UK music piracy scene reveal a staggering drop in online music theft over the last year, with the number of pirated tracks falling by around a third, dropping fromĀ 301m in the year to March 2012 to just 199m one year later.

Ofcom and researcher Kantar aren't going so far as to point a finger at the reasons for the decline, although it does suggest that public awareness of streaming sites rose significantly during the quarter up to May 2013. But we'd say the fall is more likely to do with the fact that all the music is now made by One Direction and Wii.i.am, so people would rather sit in silence. [Ofcom via Guardian]
