Shipping tankers floating about in the piracy-rife waters around Somalia are using an audio weapon to scare off attackers, with the music of former teen pop sensation Britney Spears said to be the most effective in deterring potential raiders.
Second Officer Rachel Owens, who helps secure tankers operating in the vulnerable piracy hot-spot off the coast of East Africa, told the Mirror: "Her songs have been chosen by the security team accompanying our tankers because they thought the pirates would hate them most. These guys can't stand Western culture or music, making Britney's hits perfect."
Owens added: "They're so effective the ship's security rarely needs to resort to firing guns -- as soon as the pirates get a blast of Britney they move on as quickly as they can."
Which doesn't make a lot of sense. Surely gun-toting pirates wouldn't be put off by music alone? Perhaps they think the musical tankers are the "superclubs" they keep hearing about, and therefore contain nothing and no one of any value? [Mirror via Radar]
