It's another sad day for the British high street, as it has been revealed Blockbuster is to close all of its remaining UK stores following its recent slide back into administration.
Managers at the stores marked for closure confirmed with MCV that UK Operations manager Dave Potter had called many individual store managers to deliver the bad news. As of yesterday, 72 shops had been earmarked for closure, but now all 264 stores look certain to be shuttering their doors for the final time ahead of Christmas. A December 20th closing date seems likely.
Blockbuster struggled in recent years against an onslaught of internet piracy, digital download services and a renewed interest in cinema going, and was unable to offer a compelling online offering to match rivals.
I've fond memories of heading down to Blockbusters on a Friday night and picking up a rented game with my Dad, and as one of the survivors of the great Zavvi exodus of Christmas 2008, I know how tough it is to be hit with news like this at this time of the year. Good luck to all the 2,000 Blockbuster employees who will be affected by the news. [MCV]
