Microsoft is believed to have whittled its shortlist of Ballmer replacements down to just five, with former MS employee and Nokia manager Stephen Elop making the cut and proceeding to next week's live elimination dance-off to become the new Microsoft CEO.

According to Microsoft sources quoted by Reuters, the list of five-or-so possible Microsoft CEO candidates include Elop, Ford boss Alan Mulally, former Skype CEO Tony Bates who's now working for Microsoft after it bought his arse, plus Satya Nadella, who's currently the EVP of Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise group. One or two other unnamed internal MS staff may also be on the pay rise list, too. [Reuters]
