Having played dead among the digital wreck of the Titanic and taken to the skies as aviation pioneer Howard Hughes, Leonardo DiCaprio's onscreen roles have seen him as no stranger to vehicular inovation. Life seems to be imitating art then, with The Great Gatsby star today revealed as the co-founder of one of next year's Formula E electric car racing teams.
DiCaprio has co-founded a Monaco-based team alongside Gildo Pallanca Pastor, owner of electric car manufacturers Venturi Automobiles. DiCaprio is a keen supporter of environmental causes, and adding his name to the increasing line-up of recognisable proponents of the championship will only aid Formula E's main aim -- to promote the green benefits of the electric car industry. DiCaprio's team joins Richard Branson's Virgin as the latest additions to the championship starting grid.
The Formula E tournament kicks off in September 2014 in China, and will tour Putrajaya, Rio de Janeiro, Punta del Este, Buenos Aires, Los Angeles, Miami, Monte Carlo, Berlin and London, showcasing the speedy cars across purpose-built city tracks. [BBC]
