New Zealand doctor James Grant had a bit of a run in with a shark while out fishing on a stretch of coastline near his home. After feeling a shark "latch on" to his leg he got his knife out and stabbed it to get it off, then started to stitch the puncture wounds by himself on the shore.
The multi-skilled Antipodean outdoor combative-surgery lifestyle ninja told the BBC that reports he sewed all of his leg wounds up himself were blown out of proportion by the media, and although he did put a couple of stitches in himself, the majority of the work was done by a surgeon friend. But he really did go to the pub afterwards for some local brews. [BBC]
