A bunch of Vikings are preparing for Ragnarok, or the end of the world, this weekend. They are doing so by gathering in York to hold a strongman contest and see who has the best beard. Fun for all the family, unless the world does end, in which case you're stuck in York with a bunch of bearded historical enthusiasts for your final moments.
The apocalyptic celebrations are part of the JORVIK Viking festival, which ends with a climactic re-enactment, or perhaps a prophetic foretelling of events to come, of the battle of Ragnarok. Although, if they're so sure the world's about to end on Saturday the 22nd with a battle of men with wooden swords pretending to be gods in York, why does the event calendar say there's going to be a shop open on the 23rd?
