Is Girls Anti-Hero Adam Driver Star Wars: Episode VII's "New Darth Vader"?

By Gerald Lynch on at

We're pretty sure that Mark "Luke Skywalker" Hamill, Harrison "Han Solo" Ford and Carrie "Princess Leia" Fisher are reprising their most-loved roles for J. J. Abrams Star Wars: Episode VII. Will Adam Driver of Girls fame be the villain wielding the Dark Side of the Force against them?

That's the latest casting rumour to come in from both Variety and the Hollywood Reporter, stating that a multi-film deal is almost ready to be signed, likely making Driver the antagonist for the entire new trilogy. It's a role described as being similar to that of Darth Vader in the original films. And it's not the first time in recent months that Driver has been linked to a starring role in a genre-flick -- ahead of Jesse Eisenberg's casting as Lex Luthor in Batman vs. Superman, Driver was linked with the role, as well as that of Nightwing.

So, does Driver make a good candidate for a Dark Lord of the Sith? There's no doubting his acting chops -- one of Hollywood's rising stars, he absolutely shines in the new series of Girls, offering up an intense, brooding and yet often-hilarious performance as character Adam Sackler. It'll be interesting to see if he's up to the task, especially seeing as many expect the script to feature cool-and-calculated villain Grand Admiral Thrawn -- which would be an against-type role for Driver. I see him more as a Han Solo-type myself, but, to be honest, he's such a promising actor that I'm pleased to just hear his name associated with the new movies. It bodes well, especially considering we had to stomach Hayden Christensen murdering the Vader role during the prequels. [Variety, Hollywood Reporter]
