Drivers heading down the A30 near Launceston had a bit of a shock last week, after a stinger device -- a spiky thing designed to burst tyres in car chases -- fell out of a police car boot and was run over by members of the public. Their tyres then duly exploded.
A Devon and Cornwall Police statement explained: "While placing emergency signage at the scene [of an accident], the stinger device fell from the boot of a police vehicle. The device was immediately run over by three vehicles, leaving five tyres damaged."
The police arranged for breakdown services to fix the five tyres popped by the stinger, with the stung drivers left waiting inside their stricken cars for a couple of hours. [The Westcountry]
