Online Streaming Police Want Age Gates Added to All UK-Facing Porn Sites

Children so young and innocent they haven't yet learned how to lie will be protected from internet porn if video streaming watchdog AtvodĀ gets its way, with the online video board asking for a compulsory age gate to be attached to all porn sites when viewed in the UK.

Atvod's scheme sounds rather unworkable, though. It would require all adult sites, even those based overseas, to apply for a licence that would only be granted if age checks were in place. Only then would they be allowed to process payments from users who are hardcore enough to pay money to access "premium" porn features. Like, er, director's commentaries and actor biographies, or whatever people obsessive enough to pay for porn demand.

To back up its claims of rampant porn use and the need for action, Atvod installed monitoring tools onĀ 45,000 computers. It found that six per cent of children under 15 had viewed some sort of porn online, with its data suggesting that a surprisingly modest 22 per cent of the UK population had looked at some specialist material on a specialist site over the past month.
