Hooray! One of the people behind the "Your computer is leaking personal information" phone scams has been convicted, with Mohammed Khalid Jamil earning a four-month suspended jail term for hiring call centre staff to trick unaware Windows users into paying for bogus malware protection.
The scam, which targeted anyone using a PC, aimed to fool users by getting them to rifle through their PC's registry files in an attempt to find things that look confusing and could conceivably be passed off as a virus. Old ladies were particularly vulnerable, ending up paying sums ranging from £35 to £150 for virus protection that was nothing more than a free download from Microsoft's site. [BBC]
