John Lewis, that slightly-posh staple of the British high street, celebrates 150 years in business this year. To mark the occasion, it's readying the release of an exclusive "Technology Icons" range, pulling together both cutting-edge tech from the likes of Dyson with home appliance staples like the Henry vacuum cleaner.
It's a line that looks to promote some of Britain's most loved gadgets from across John Lewis's history, with a number of retro designs only available to John Lewis customers. Here, we've picked out what we feel are the best of the bunch, ahead of the range's release across the summer.
Aww, would you look at this pair? Henry the hoover, sorry, vacuum cleaner, gets two new pals this May named "John" and "Lewis", exclusive to John Lewis stores. Made in Somerset, the classic vacuum cleaner was first introduced in 1981. These special editions will set you back £129.95 each.
Dyson's futuristic AM05 Hot + Cool Fan Heater will hit John Lewis stores in a magenta shade this May, priced at £359.95. Keeping you cool in the summer and hot in the winter, its oscillation and temperature settings can be determined by its magnetic remote control, which can be stored safely away on top of the unit rather than be lost in the dark recesses of your sofa.
There's nothing quite like waking up to a cup of tea, but unless you've got a particularly doting partner you're going to need to get out from under those warm covers and head to the kitchen. Or you could always invest in Swan's STM101JLP Teasmade. Featuring a Cummersdale floral print design on its top side, the Teasmade has a timer that can be set to make you a cup of tea just as you wake up, living on your bedside table. With a rapid boil function and a 600ml capacity, the original idea for the Teasmade dates right back to 1891, and John Lewis has stocked many variations of the supremely-British gadget over the years. This latest design lands at the end of May, priced £59.95.
Smeg, the only fridge brand to be named after a Red Dwarf curse word*, has enjoyed a long partnership with John Lewis. Its FAB28 Retro Fridge with Freezer Compartment combines a simple 1950s-like classic design with an even older 1864 Cummersdale print. With a capacity of 256 litres and an A++ energy rating, it goes on sale from May, priced £1,499.
Kenwood has offered up an exclusive design to John Lewis of its KMix KMX86 Stand Mixer, with the green and purple hues of the John Lewis brand striped across its top. Featuring a five litre stainless steel bowl, 500W motor and a range of attachments for different mixing options, it'll be available from late June, priced at £379.95.
If you're at a loss as to what to buy Prince for his birthday, this purple-hued kettle, toaster and stand mixer trio from Kenwood would be right up his (alphabet) street. John Lewis exclusives in the diminutive musician's favourite shade, the kettle, toaster and mixer will be available from June into July, priced at £59.95, £59.95 and £379.95 respectively.
All items will be on sale in John Lewis stores, and will be orderable from the John Lewis website.
*Sorry comedy sci-fi fans, that's not really where Smeg gets its name.
