According to the folks at TechCrunch Apple has gone ahead and bought LuxVue Technology for somewhere in the region of $43 million (£25.4 million).
LuxVue have been keeping a low profile over the past few years, but the majority of it's work has involved creating low-power micro-LED screens for consumer electronics. So it's not exactly difficult to figure out why Apple would be interested in bringing it into the fold.
When asked about the sale, Apple replied rather cryptically saying, "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans." It's no confirmation, but it certainly isn't a denial either.
If the purchase is true and Apple do start implementing low-power LED displays in their devices, it probably wouldn't take long for other manufacturers to follow suit. I definitely wouldn't mind having a brighter, energy efficient display on my phone. [TechCrunch]
