British director Gareth Edwards has been chosen to direct the first Star Wars spin-off movie, set for release on the 16th December 2016.
Edwards is currently riding high off the success of his Godzilla reboot, in cinemas now, and will be teaming up with writer Gary Whitta (who penned 2010's The Book of Eli) for the production. Little-known fact -- Gary Whitta was an old games journalist in the UK, once the editor-in-chief of PC Gamer, with whom Gizmodo UK shares a publisher.
"Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life - join the Rebel Alliance!," said Edwards in a statement. "I could not be more excited and honoured to go on this mission."
I absolutely loved Godzilla (as did cinema goers going by its box-office takings), and it'll be interesting to see which direction Edwards (a director who is now known for his monster flicks) will take the series. I'm putting my money on Edwards getting the rumoured Boba Fett film -- with all of his gadgets, he's just as deadly as any towering monster. [BBC]
