Microsoft's decision to drop a mandatory Kinect sensor from the Xbox One isn't just about dropping the console's overall price -- it's an opportunity to give game developers more power to work with too.
"June #XboxOne software dev kit gives devs access to more GPU bandwidth. More performance, new tools and flexibility to make games better," wrote head of Xbox Phil Spencer on Twitter.
Developers will now have access to up to 10 per cent additional GPU power, with Microsoft unlocking resources previously reserved for the Kinect. Alongside some other SDK tweaks, it should give developers a little more breathing space when creating games -- especially those in pursuit of the 1080p/60fps Holy Grail of this generation. And as developers increasingly push the envelope in terms of scale and graphical fidelity, expect the now-optional Kinect to be increasingly sidelined. [Twitter]
