His Game of Thrones book series is already long enough to be responsible for a substantial portion of the world's deforestation woes, but George RR Martin isn't set to give up on the world of Westeros just yet. Though the epic tale is currently lined up to be a seven-book series, the fantasy author's editor is now telling readers to brace themselves for a possible eighth installment.
Speaking during a fan Q&A with website Suvudu Universe, Martin's editor Anne Groell shared this tease:
I remember when he called me, years and years back, to confess that his little trilogy was…well…no longer a trilogy. He predicted four books. I said Seven Books for Seven Kingdoms. Then he said five books. I said Seven Books for Seven Kingdoms. Then he went to six. I said… Well, you get it. Finally, we were on the same page. Seven Books for Seven Kingdoms. Good. Only, as I recently learned while editing The World of Ice and Fire (another awesome thing you must buy when it comes out!), there are really technically eight kingdoms, all having to do with who has annexed what when Aegon the Conqueror landed in Westeros. So, maybe eight books for Seven Kingdoms would be okay.
However, even with this tease of an eighth book, it's worth remembering that Martin still hasn't got around to finishing the sixth book in the series, let alone the seventh or eighth. Both his American and UK publishers only have the author under contract for seven books too, after which he has no commitment to them. Still, with Game of Thrones being the money-spinner it is, it's not hard to imagine another book being squeezed out of such a rich world -- providing there's anyone left alive in it by the end of the seventh book.
