Car Seatbelts are Getting "Smart" to Know if You're Sleeping at the Wheel

By Gary Cutlack on at

Engineers are working on a solution to the problem of falling asleep at the wheel, creating the concept of a "smart" seatbelt to monitor the breathing and heart rates of a driver and issues an alert should it think you're a bit too relaxed on a motorway slog.

The system, being developed under the name HARKEN, is to be trialled in real cars on Spanish roads, following successful tests on race tracks. The makers claim "thousands" of lives could be saved across Europe every year if more drivers are warned when their fatigue levels reach critical. [Telegraph]
