Apple Ponders Rear-Mounted iPad Touch-Sensors

The dream of a gaming-themed iPad may be on some sort of future ideas whiteboard at Apple, with the hardware giant filing a patent that allows for an array of touch controls to be added to the backside of its device. A bit like Sony's PS Vita, which... has already been made and is in the shops.

Apple's US patent describes a "configurable input device," that has the ability to adapt button placement depending on the control whims of whatever it's being used to command. Apple's tech would use either ultrasonic, pressure-based or capacitive sensors to work out what you're fingering, with the option of showing an overlay of your hand on the front display to enhance accuracy.
