Microsoft Scans its OneDrive Storage for Child Porn

By Gary Cutlack on at

Following the reassuring yet troubling news that Google routinely checks hashes of known child porn images against pics stored in Gmail, it's emerged that Microsoft also checks its cloud servers for grim imagery and forwards results to the police.

The Microsoft case saw a US man based in Pennsylvania arrested, after he was found to have stored a particular image in his OneDrive account and attempted to send two others via his Live.com email address. A local police officer told the BBC that Microsoft itself instigated the investigation, so it's clearly actively scanning for illegal material. [BBC]
