The trailer for Birdman, starring Michael Keaton as a washed-up actor and former star of a superhero franchise who's trying to stage a comeback with a play he wrote to direct and star in himself, looks like all kinds of meta cinematic insanity—set to a sweet cover of Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood for perfect dramatic effect.
Yes, that's Michael Keaton levitating in Y-fronts.
This version was sung by Florida rocker Brent Smith who heads up the band Shinedown. Both of these names were new to me, but I've always loved Eric Burdon's take on the tune for The Animals in 1965, so my ears perked up when I heard it in the clip.
(Tangential side note: Listen to The Animals. You probably know them as the guys from Newcastle with the iconic rendition of House of the Rising Sun but they're absolutely great. Here's a few to kick things off: I'm Crying; Bring it on Home to Me; We Gotta Get Out of This Place.)
These dudes were, of course, beat by the incomparable Nina Simone, who was the first to record the song in 1964.
