London Police Testing Gang-Banger Pre-Crime Prediction System

By Gary Cutlack on at

London's police force is testing a new form of predictive crime tool, which mashes up historic criminal activity with current actions of known gang members and attempts to guesstimate the likelihood of a crim doing something bad.

The software, managed by Accenture, uses historic data from four years of criminal activity across London and combines this with what crimes were committed by the gangs and their members in the fifth year. Add modern stuff like social media activity into the mix and, so they say, a successful future crime indicator model can be assembled. Although it's only at the pilot stage right now, and isn't using live social media data, so no one's going to get done for an aggressive tweet and criminal record combo just yet.

Accenture's Muz Janoowalla said of the pont of the software bobby: "What this does is tell you who are the highest risk individuals that you should target your limited resources against." [BBC]
