Slim Smartphone Lens Promises Optical Zoom Without the Bulge

By Gary Cutlack on at

A new way of managing optical zoom has been demonstrated by a company called DynaOptics, which claims to have replaced the extending parts with a system that zooms by using an asymmetrical lens that moves inside the housing.

The prototype moves its lopsided lenses sideways and up or down, bending light and magnifying images non-digitally and without the need for a flimsy tube thing to poke itself out of the back of your phone or compact camera. The idea, if proven workable, could go into production by the end of 2015. [DynaOptics via Cnet]
