The geniuses at Slaperoo Percussion hacked together this prototype for an electric instrument made from a spring doorstop. Finally, somebody is harnessing the wonderful household tone we've been ignoring for years.
The electric doorstop uses a tiny magnetic pickup at the base of the spring, which turns its vibrations into a electric signal that outputs to a standard 1/4-inch jack. From there, you can apply all matter of effects. The results vary from gooey to sharp and crisp.
This is only a prototype for now, but Slaperoo says that with enough interest they might start selling the electric spring. The company already makes its other percussion instruments to order, and this design is so simple that we wouldn't be too surprised if they go for it. [Slaperoo via Synthtopia]
