It had so much promise! But when Amazon finally revealed its Fire Phone earlier this year, it proved disappointing -- a glorified Amazon store front with some 3D features squeezed into its frame. And, in the US at least, the sales reflect that underwhelmed response.
In its earnings call this week, the company announced that it was taking a $170 million dollar writedown, mostly thanks to misguided expectations on the Fire Phone. In other words, there's $83 million dollars worth of Fire Phone stock gathering dust in a warehouse somewhere.
While it's too early to say if it's performed equally poorly in the UK, having only launched here in September, Amazon's first smartphone is looking as though it could well be its last, too.
