The Best iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 Cases

By Spencer Hart on at

Last week Apple gifted us with not one, but two beautifully designed new iPads that are out this week. But if you're already living in constant fear of dropping or scratching your brand-new touchscreen darling, you've come to the right place. We've collected ten of the best cases around to protect your tablet-y bundles of joy.

iPad Mini 3

1.) Grovemade Walnut Case

Wooden cases nicely complement Jony Ive's industrial design, with the wood's grain contrasting excellently with a precise metal unibody. Grovemade Walnut case is made from US maple and walnut, it offers three standing positions and acts as a smart cover, automatically turning the screen on and off. [Buy the Grovemade Walnut for £89 incl. international shipping]

2.) Proporta Quilted Barbour Case

Hacking through the countryside is all well and good, but when the time comes to curl up in-front of a fire, no iPad case is more country-chic than Proporta's Barbour case. Perfect for pretending you own a manor house in Norfolk. [Buy the Quilted Barbour case for £54.95]

3.) Otterbox Agility System

Not only does the Otterbox Agility System protect your iPad Mini, it carries all the extras you need as well. It's got interior pockets and exterior pockets for all your bits and pieces and a carry strap for easy toting, while also folding into a typing stand. Perfect for the business person on the go. The Agility System requires two parts in order to work, the Shell Case and the Deluxe Folio. [Availability TBD]

4.) Incipio NGP

If you're looking for the perfect balance between protection and minimal bulk, then the Incipio NGP is the case for you. The case is manufactured from semi-rigid, impact resistant 'Flex20' material which measures just 1mm thick, perfect for protecting against the everyday bumps and scratches an iPad can run into. [Buy the Incipio NGP for £7.99]

5.) Tech21 Impact Mesh

Clumsier than average? Maybe you're more suited to the Tech21 Impact Mesh, which incorporates the brilliant shock-absorbing material, D3O. Available in blue, black, pink or clear. [Buy the Tech21 Impact Mesh for £29.95]

6.) Snugg Shock, Drop and Kid-Proof Case

There are countless fun and educational apps out on the iPad for little ones to play and learn from, but handing over a few-hundred pounds' worth of electronics to someone with lesser-developed motor skills can be daunting. Consider the Snugg case, which protects you tablet from potential kid-induced damage. It comes in blue or pink, has a lifetime guarantee, and is bundled with a large slice of peace of mind. [Buy for £24.99 from Amazon]

7.) ULAK Rotating Faux Leather Case

Rotating iPad cases are numerous, but this one by ULAK appears to be one of the best-quality ones on the market. The rotation mechanism means you can stand the iPad sturdy on either landscape or portrait, all while still being attached to the case. ULAK offer 23 different style options. [Buy from Amazon for £8.99]

8.) Herschel Supply Anchor Sleeve

More of a sleeve than a case, this lovely design by makers of backpacks and the like, Herschel, will even fit an iPad that has on a slim case, such as the Apple Smart Cover. It comes in five colour options, and is available exclusively at the Apple Store. [Buy from Apple from £24.95]

9.) Michael Kors Sleeve

Michael Kors is a high-end maker of watches, handbags and the like. If your partner was one of the many women who got an MK handbag for Christmas, or even if they dream of having one, then this is the case for them. The design mimics the company's handbags, even down the Michael Kors logo running across the top. [Buy from Apple for £59.95]

10.) Inateck Felt

This neat design by Inateck combines felt and real leather to protect your tablet. The felt is mould- and water-proof, won't scratch your device, and is said to be enough to absorb shocks should you drop it. [Buy now from Amazon for £14.99]

iPad Air 2

The iPad Mini wasn't Apple's only new tablet: also announced was a successor to the iPad Air. At only 6.1mm thick, the iPad Air 2 is the world's thinnest tablet, so you're going to want to protect that delicate slab of metal, just in case it bends like Beckham it's smaller brother.

1.) DODOcase BookBack

If you don't want to destroy all of Ive's hard work, the DODOcase BookBack is your best bet. This leather skin adheres to the rear of the device and defends its soft aluminium case from scratches. Note: The DODOcase BookBack is designed for the first iPad Air, but will still fit the second edition, albeit with a superfluous microphone cut-out.
[Buy the DODOcase BookBack for £25 incl. international shipping]

2.) Griffin Survivor All-Terrain

At almost £700 for the top-tier iPad, I know I'd be in tears (and so would my wallet) if I dropped it. Slap this rugged case from Griffin on and put your mind at ease, safe in the knowledge that your new pride and joy is protected to a military-grade standard. Available in black, blue/black and pink/black. [Buy the Griffin Survivor for £54.99]

3.) Nodus Access Case

We're big fans of the Nodus Access collection, they're well-made, innovative and homegrown in Cornwall. The micro-suction technology is an excellent way to hold the iPad in place, while showing off the tablet's curves without leaving any sticky residue behind. [Buy the Nodus Access Case for £99.99]

4.) Apple Smart Cover

If you're after perfect tablet/case synergy, the Apple Smart Cover, designed in the same building (probably) is the product for you. The Smart Cover is excellent for protecting the screen with its lightweight, minimal design. It works with magnets – that's the future right there. [Buy the Apple Smart Cover for £29]

5.) Mujjo Envelope Sleeve

If you're looking for something you can throw in a rucksack, the Mujjo envelope sleeve looks great and offers all-round protection. Manufactured from thick felt and vegetable tanned leather, the Mujjo is a perfect little sleeping bag for your iPad Air 2. [Buy the Mujjo Envelope for £39.56]

6.) Mofred Black & Tan Leather Standby Case

This smartly styled Mofred black & tan iPad Air case doubles up as a stand for all your video watching needs, and has a magnet built in to wake up your iPad Air 2 only when needed. It's made from genuine leather, and has a neat compartment for documents. [Buy from Amazon for £14.89]

7.) ESR Illustrators Series

The construction of ESR's cases is not revolutionary, simply using a smart cover-style design. What sets them apart are the excellent illustrations adorning the cases, with five different, eccentric styles to choose from. [Buy from Amazon for £11.99]

8.) Pepkoo Rugged Silicone Case

Whether you're protecting from slippery-fingered children, or your own cack-handedness, you can't get much more for your money than this case. It has a rigid internal frame, surrounded by silicone, and a neat kickstand to keep it upright. It will keep out the dust, protect from splashes, and that neat rigid/silicone design will absorb any shocks. Six colour options available. [Buy from Amazon for £13.99]

9.) Torro Premium Leather Case

Another one for the leather-lovers, this time at a third of the cost of the Nodus Access case listed previously. The Torro case is made from premium Italian leather, will wake and sleep as you open and close it, and will turn into a stand. [Buy from Amazon for £34.99]

10.) Michael Kors Leather Clutch

This case is just like the iPad Mini case shown previously, this time being a sleek clutch for the iPad Air 2. [Buy from Apple for £119.95]

11.) Logitch Type+ Keyboard Case

The Logitech Type+ Keyboard Case turns your iPad Air 2 into key-packing laptop of sorts. With a row of iOS shortcuts you can get three months battery life off a single charge, based on two hours of daily usage. A folio cover case, it's available in both black and red. [£84.95 from John Lewis]

Updated on May 8th 2015 to include the Logitech Type+ iPad Air 2 case.
