Joseph Gordon-Levitt Will Play Edward Snowden in New Oliver Stone Film

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, everyone's favorite sad-eyed, inevitably likable actor, will play Edward Snowden, everyone's favorite vacant-eyed, always unkempt former NSA contractor-turned-whistleblower, in a new movie directed by Oliver Stone. Do you see the resemblance?

It must be the eyebrows. The filmmakers announced the casting decision on Monday evening but didn't offer many more details about the film. We do know that it's based on two books: The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World's Most Wanted Man by Luke Harding and Time of the Octopus by Anatoly Kucherena. We also know that Stone was selected as director because the producers said the movie needed "an independent in the true sense, where political pressures will not come into play."

That said, it'll be tough to tell the story better than Laura Poitros who was actually the documentary filmmaker and journalist who found Snowden and documented the actual events that started the Snowden saga in her own (brilliant) film, Citizenfour. Her character will most certainly be in the Oliver Stone movie, as will journalist Glenn Greenwald.

Who do you think will play them? My money's on Zooey Deschanel and Geoffrey Arend. They could call it 500 Days of Snowden. [Guardian]
