South Park's Hilarious Attack on Freemium Apps Hits UK at Last

By Matt Hill on at

South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone recently added "free-to-play" games and in-app purchases to their long, long, long list of targets for merciless ridicule, and now non-nefarious-streaming Brits get to laugh along like loons at the results.

Comedy Central's delayed UK run of Season 18 in its 10pm slot finally hits the 'Freemium Isn't Free' episode tonight, which first aired in the US on bonfire night.

Up there with the 'Make Love, Not Warcraft' episode in the "absolutely nailed it" stakes, Stan gets addicted to a free Terrance and Phillip smartphone game (obviously), whose upgrades turn out to be far from free (obviously), and Canada's Minister of Mobile Gaming is implicated in the dastardly scheme (OK, we didn't see that one coming). And the skewering comes thick and fast…

Phillip: "We understand micro-paying, but can't the game hidden inside the charade at least be fun?"

Minister: "No, no. It has to be just barely fun. If the game was too fun there would be no need to micro-pay to make it more fun."

Much micro transaction-related mirth ensues. Here's a clip to get you warmed up… [Comedy Central]
