We all know that Disney is going to be milking the Star Wars saga for all it's worth, with a new trilogy of films releasing once a year across 2015, 2017 and 2019. Between each installment in the trilogy will be a spin-off film, and fan favourite Boba Fett is tipped to be getting a starring role in the first of them in 2016. According to sources speaking to Slash Film, we've now got a good idea what that flick will be about, too.
It's claiming that the film will focus around a group of bounty hunters trying to steal the plans for the first Death Star. These are the plans, of course, that eventually make their way into R2-D2 in the first Star Wars film, A New Hope, which Princess Leia desperately wants Obi-Wan Kenobi to get hold of. It's a heist film basically -- The Italian Job with blasters and Stormtroopers.
While no Boba Fett film has been confirmed by Disney yet, this pre-Episode IV timeline would allow the jetpack... er...packing bounty hunter to be young and fighting fit, working for the highest bidder and, potentially, giving some background to the icy relationship that Boba Fett and Darth Vader share in Empire Strikes Back.
As ever, this all remains just rumour. But there's no smoke without fire, and there's a hell of a lot of smoke surrounding a Boba Fett spin off. The only certain things we do know about the 2016 Star Wars film is that it's to be written by Gary Whitta and directed by Gareth Edwards. It'll likely shoot in the UK, too, just as most of Episode VII did. Considering how suprisingly-excellent Edwards's Godzilla proved to be, I'd find lack of faith in the spin off disturbing.
