Tech giant Toshiba is making inroads into the salad industry, using abandoned facilities to farm indoors under artificial lighting. Which means farmers in hairnets and zero chance of finding a slug in your sandwich.
Toshiba is growing its leafy greens inside under fluorescent and LED lighting, with the ambition of selling the indoor farming tech to countries where it's not possible to grow the stuff outdoors or for sizeable parts of the year.
A couple of the artificially lit indoor salads will go on sale shortly, hopefully attracting buyers with its pesticide-free nature and the fact that it doesn't need washing before someone pushes it uneaten to the side of a plate then scrapes it into the bin. [Quartz]
