iPad App Promises Nervous Fliers it Can Land a Plane

Xavion is an iPad app that claims it can steer a small plane to safety, thanks to its pre-loaded data packs and location sensing abilities.

Once installed, the Xavion app tracks flights and continuously plots a route to the nearest airport, meaning it always has a simple flight plan to hand should something bad happen up in the air. The maker also says its onboard backups of flight instruments can be used too, should one of the plane's devices pack up.

The price of possible safety is high, though -- Xavion users require paid data packs to manage landings and a monthly subscription. [Xavion via Popsci]
