First it was facial recognition, then it was fingerprint scanners -- could the next mobile security interface revolution come with the blink of an eye? ViewSonic is banking on it -- its next smartphone, the V55, looks set to be the first to use iris scanning as a means to unlock your phone.
The above teaser clip, acquired by GizmoChina shows off the handset, peeking at the peepers of a businessman and lady. The complexity of the iris is greater than even a fingerprint, making it an incredibly secure key and quite the coup for ViewSonic if it's truly become the first company to put it in a consumer mobile.
ViewSonic's first mobile since 2012, the device is also said to sport a 5.5-inch full HD display, 1.4GHz 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 410, 2GB of RAM and a choice of 16GB or 32GB storage options. A Sony-built 13MP rear camera also features, in a casing that will allow users to attach external lenses for added zoom and zany effects.
No word yet on the V55's release or cost (it's already missed an expected 2014 launch), but with this alleged unveiling of its eye-scanning capabilities, it's looking a far more interesting prospect for 2015. We'll be keeping an eye out (every pun intended) for this to pop up at next week's CES show. [GizmoChina -- YouTube]
