TV producer Tony Verna, who is credited as bringing the instant replay to our TV screens, has died aged 81. His first replay was shown during a US sports broadcast on December 7th, 1963.
The poor people of 1963 had to be told that what they were seeing was a replay of the thing that had just happened in the Army vs. Navy match, with the announcer saying: "...this is not live! Ladies and gentlemen, Army has not scored again" as the replay played.
Now it's hard to even process something until we've seen it happen at least 12 times, even in slow sports like snooker, we're so used to and reliant upon Tony's way of viewing the world. [Variety via The Verge]
