Foxconn has been busy putting together a new $2.6 billion factory dedicated to building displays exclusively for Apple devices. But a new report from Japanese newspaper Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun suggests that the plant will have facilities to build OLED screens too. Could Apple be preparing to drop its long-favoured LCD screens in favour of OLED displays?
The newspaper's source states that both smartphones and wearables will make use of the production line's produce, suggesting that not only could future iPhone's get the superior screen tech, but successive versions of the Apple Watch too. Foxconn is said to have partnered with touch panel specialists InnoLux for the OLED line, with an aim to produce sixth-generation low temperature poly-silicon-films in mass quantities by 2016.
