That Rumoured 12-Inch MacBook Air Could Be a Stunner

Ah, the wonders of photorealistic 3D modelling software. Though it's only been two days since 9to5Mac leaked that Apple is planning the biggest overhaul to its laptops in years—in the form of a new 12-inch MacBook Air—we've already got gauzy, hyper-real renderings of this sucker. If this is what Apple is planning, count us in.

Our friend Martin Hajek, whose visualisations of Apple product design have appeared on Gizmodo before, sent over his latest project: 3D modelling and rendering out how he thinks Apple's new machine will look, based on 9to5Mac's artist renditions. Oh, and he Photoshopped it into an Apple store collage for realism points, too.

As we pointed out earlier this week, the rumoured MacBook Airs have a conspicuous lack of ports. Where you'd normally find a Thunderbolt port, MagSafe charging slot, and SDXC card slot, plus room for your headphones and some USB ports, there's nothing except a single USB Type-C port. If it's true, it's massive change—and it means the body of the laptop would be far simpler to fabricate (not to mention cheaper and structurally stronger).

Hajek has added some other rather creative flourishes too—like showing the laptop in iPhone 6-ish material schemes, including a champagne-coloured body and a black version. That's pretty unlikely, and frankly there's every chance this 12-inch device may never be released at all. But hell, through the rose-colored lens of a rendering farm, anything seems possible.
