Thunderbirds Are... Now Looking Eerily Like a One Direction Tribute Band

By Gerald Lynch on at

Thunderbirds are back! Preparing to return to TV screens with ITV's Thunderbirds Are Go!, today we got a sneak-peek at what the rebooted crew of world-saving pilots will look like.

And, naturally, in the year 2015 (50 years after the show originally aired), they look like they could be understudies for open-source-hating boy band One Direction.

To give the production its due credit, though, there are some big names attached to the reboot. Gone Girl Bond girl Rosamund Pike is cast perfectly as the voice of Lady Penelope, Game of Thrones' Thomas Brodie-Sangster (who looks like a living, breathing Thunderbirds puppet) taking on the role of John Tracy and Fonejacker's Kayvan Novak voicing Brains. And there will be a taste of the 1960s original, too, in the cast, with David Graham once again voicing chauffeur Parker.

With a mixture of computer-generated imagery and practical puppetry being used in the 26-episode series, ITV has also called upon the expertise of Peter Jackson's Weta Worksop effects studio, which brought to life/milked to death Middle Earth in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies. So the pedigree is definitely there.

Anyway. Here's a before-and-after shot:

How's that for a makeover? Gok Wan, eat your heart out.
