Finding Porn on YouTube is Easy – So Long as You Speak Gaelic

By Gerald Lynch on at

Of all the places on the web you could go hunting for saucy videos, well-policed YouTube (despite the proliferation of suggestive thumbnail pictures accompanying many of its clips) probably isn't the place to go looking for it.

That is, unless, you can read Gaelic. A whole bunch of X-rated clips were left lingering on the site since October of last year, until journalist Maitiú Ó Coimín brought it to the attention of YouTube. Tagged with the Gaelic word "scannán" (meaning "film"), they'd slipped under the radar of YouTube's auto-monitoring processes.

“I looked a bit further into it, and there were about 15 to 20 films of a questionable nature,” Coimín told the Irish Independent. “These were real pornographic films.”

In YouTube's defence, it pulled the videos almost immediately after they were brought to its attention. But for the clammy-palmed teenagers reading this: stretch your YouTube searches to include little-spoken languages, and you may be able stick two fingers up at your ISP's web filters. [Independent]
