Samsung Sets Up Google X Labs Rival For Mad Projects

Telepresence robots, unmanned vehicles, virtual reality hardware; Samsung's new research and development division for "innovative" projects sounds like it'll be a blast.

Uncovered by the Korea Times, the new division looks set to go into direct competition with Google's Project X labs, and will expand upon the warm reception given to Samsung's Gear VR project by working on drone tech and 3D printing systems too.

“The team will explore how technologies could help people’s daily life for a better future,” a Samsung official told the Korea Times.

“Given the significance of the team, members will have more authority and independence because the main purpose of the team isn’t to develop single devices for any imminent results, but to develop solutions to go with Samsung’s manufacturing capabilities.”

While specifics aren't clear yet, any future-gazing department's output is unlikely to be seen in consumer-facing products anytime soon. But as a sub-division of Samsung's mobile team, it's likely that whatever innovations are produced will be headed to your pocket. [Korea Times]
