Those living outside the stretches of fibre broadband internet heaven, turn your gaze to Virgin Media. It's today announced a significant expansion of its fibre optic network, pledging £3 billion to extend its coverage from 13 million to 17 million homes over the next five years.
Claiming it's the biggest investment in broadband infrastructure in the UK for a decade, it reckons the expansion will be worth £8 billion to the UK economy overall.
However, rather than plugging the connectivity gaps in rural areas, Virgin Media is looking to fill the gaps in its existing network in and around major cities and towns. Those in rural areas continue to be overlooked. Virgin Media is currently in the process of expanding its network to 110,000 homes across Glasgow, east London, Sunderland and Teesside.
Virgin Media estimates 6,000 new jobs, including 1,000 apprenticeships, will come from the investment. [Virgin Media]
