The Best MacBook Cases: Air, Pro Retina and New MacBook Accessories

By Jack Tomlin on at

We tend to focus on phone cases here on Giz UK when doing these accessory round-ups. But with the new MacBook fresh off Tim Cook's production line, and MacBook Airs and Retina Pros being the popular machines that they are, we thought it high time to highlight some of the nicer cases and carriers with which to shroud your hallowed Apple laptop. These are the MacBook cases you should be looking at, whichever fruity machine you've picked up

MacBook Cases for MacBook Air

Inateck Felt and Flannel Sleeve

Starting with the MacBook Air, we have found this lovely sleeve produced by Inateck. The felt exterior is pleasingly tactile but more importantly the flannel interior provides a soft blanket to surround the laptop. As well as storage for the MacBook Air, Inateck's sleeve has pockets on the back and within the design, as well as an extra pouch for carrying a mouse or power adapter. Available in both 11-inch and 13-inch. £13 – £14.

Twelve South BookBook

Twelve South BookBook

There's nothing like a bit of juxtaposition when it comes to accessorising. Old-looking tome + cutting edge MacBook Air = WANT. The design comprises two rigid covers that serve to provide impact protection, as well as reinforced corners and spine; the exterior of the laptop is protected by soft cushions within the case, and the outside is made of hand-distressed, genuine leather. Available for MacBook Air 11-inch and 13-inch. £60 - £67.

ToughGuard Hard Case – Union Flag

Perhaps the softly-softly approach doesn't work for you and your MacBook Air. If that's the case (that's a really hard pun to avoid in these round-ups, I assure you) then consider one of ToughGuard's protective shells. We've picked out the Union Flag design, which looks lovely and distressed, but there is a range of other colour options in both 11-inch and 13-inch sizes. Available for the MacBook Air 13-inch.

MacBook Cases for MacBook Pro Retina

Thule Vectros Bumper

Swedish brand Thule is well-known for its rugged outdoors equipment, and it has applied its know-how to creating this protective bumper for the Pro Retina. The Vectros bumper clips onto your MacBook Retina laptop, and provides a pretty impressive two-metre drop protection (not that I imagine you want to test that). A great idea if you have kids that use your Apple laptop. Available for MacBook Pro Retina 13-inch and 15-inch. £66 - £70.

Lavievert Kraft Paper and Felt

Lavievert Kraft Paper and Felt

The exterior of Lavievert's case is made from kraft paper, which is a more refined kind of paper that is soft to the touch and also water-resistant. The lining is made of felt to keep the scratches at bay while toting your MacBook around town. On the back is a neat pocket for any documents or other bits and bobs. Available for MacBook Pro Retina 13-inch and 15-inch £11 - £12.

Incase Icon Sleeve

For a more simple approach to materials and design there is the Icon from InCase, which is made from soft neoprene on the outside and a soft fur lining for protection on the inside. The company's own Tensaerlite technology runs through the sleeve, which provides a shock-absorption should your MacBook slip from your grasp. Available for MacBook Pro Retina 13-inch and 15-inch. £60

MacBook Cases for New MacBook Retina

Waterfield Travel Express

Waterfield Travel Express

US accessory-maker Waterfield produces some really high-end goods for MacBooks and iPads, some of which venture far into the lands of three-figure price-tags. The company's Travel Express case, designed specifically for the new Macbook 12-inch, is more affordable while being a really well-thought out design. You can choose from either nylon, ballistic nylon, or waxed canvas for the material, and what's more a strap can be also added to the sleeve to turn it into a satchel. Available for the new MacBook 12-inch. £57 – £70

Kavaj Sydney Cognac Brown

To add a bit of classic style to the design dynamic of your new MacBook, you can't go much wrong with a leather case. This simple design by Kavaj features a soft flannel interior to prevent any potential scratches from playing heavy on your heart, and of course that lovely, genuine leather exterior. Also available in black. £40 - £50

i-Blason Transparent Hard Shell

It might seem like sacrilege to hide the super-slim aesthetics of the new MacBook behind the hard confines of a shell, but let's be real: this is a bloody expensive laptop and a potential scratch-mark would not be welcome. This particular shell is available in gold, frost black and frost clear, all of which come with a matte finish. Available for the new MacBook 12-inch. £20
