‘Because you can’ has long been the rationale of mountain climbers, but it also works pretty well for Robbie Maddison, who used a tricked-out dirt bike to surf waves in Tahiti, French Polynesia.
Maddison’s bike uses small skis to provide enough floatation while moving, and the tread on the rear wheel is enough to drive the bike forward (the same thing that lets snowmobilers drive across water, if they’re going fast enough).
It’s definitely cool as a one-off stunt (and the videography is jaw-droppingly good), but I’m hoping it doesn’t catch on as a sport. Jet skis are already annoying enough. [YouTube]
