Have YOU Phoned the Revenge Porn Helpline?

By Gary Cutlack on at

Did you know there's a specific governmental hotline dedicated to the support of those struggling to remove revenge porn of themselves from the internet? Well there is, and it's surprisingly well used too, with government stats claiming that around 1,800 people have called it since it was launched back in February.

The government says the calls cover more thanĀ 280 individual cases, with operatives from theĀ South West Grid for Learning offering legal advice to those who've suddenly found the photos they took of their genitals as a special gift for a friend or broad-minded relative appearing online.

Some stats released by the helpline's operators show that, unsurprisingly, the overwhelming majority of victims are women, with 75 per cent of calls coming from female callers. But it's not always the jilted ex-boyfriend doing the vengeance, with the new female partners of men apparently keen on posting images of their man's previous girlfriends as part of some sort of twisted "Ha ha, I win" shaming ritual.

Of the 25 per cent of calls coming from men, 40 per cent of those are from gay men -- with half of man-on-man revenge porn cases involving some form of bribery or blackmail to stop having private images released.

If you have been affected by the issues raised in this article, the UK's revenge porn hotline can be reached on 0845 6000 459. [Gov.uk]
