Kinky Sex and Hollywood Blockbusters Dominate Amazon's All-Time UK Kindle Bestsellers List

By James O Malley on at

Amazon has announced the top selling Kindle books of all time in the UK, to celebrate the 5th birthday of its Kindle store. It seems that readers aren't particularly adventurous, preferring on the whole to stick with titles that have been turned into blockbuster films.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, three of the top four places go to the books from the Fifty Shades trilogy - an anonymous Kindle app or e-reader making for a great way to disguise the fact that you're reading such a trashy novel rather than that ultra-worthy book that you're definitely going to get around to, honest.

Other titles in the top 10 include Gone Girl, Life of Pi and Twelve Years a Slave confirming that the Kindle store is very much a virtual railway station WH Smiths.

The authors list is a similar compilation of big names, with Jack Reacher author Lee Child and Game of Thrones writer George RR Martin both putting in an appearance too. Interestingly, Amazon says that when you take the top 100 authors by UK sales, 6 of them are self-published using Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing platform.

Amazon also claims that Yorkshire is the romance book capital of the UK, based on sales-per-capita, and Cambridge is the #1 place for Society, Politics and Philosophy books. Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dunfermline are apparently the most into crime and mystery thrillers.
